Three Countries Pledge Additional Aid to Cuba Amid Ongoing US Pressure Campaign
Leaders from Mexico, Brazil, and Spain have issued a joint statement pledging increased humanitarian aid to Cuba, while emphasizing the importance of respecting the island nation’s sovereignty. The statement was released during a gathering of leftist leaders in Barcelona.
The three countries expressed concern over the “serious humanitarian crisis” affecting Cuba’s population. They also warned against any actions that may contravene international law. The joint statement called for respect for territorial integrity, sovereign equality, and peaceful dispute resolution, as outlined in the United Nations Charter.
The pledge of additional aid comes amid a US pressure campaign aimed at prompting leadership change in Cuba. US President Donald Trump has imposed trade restrictions on the island since the 1960s. However, his administration has recently increased pressure on Cuba’s government, including barring oil imports from Venezuela and threatening sanctions against countries that deliver oil to Cuba.
Cuba’s President Miguel Diaz-Canel has responded to these efforts by emphasizing the need for the Cuban people to decide their own future in full freedom. Earlier this week, Trump suggested that the US could use military force against Cuba, although his administration has denied contributing to the humanitarian situation on the island.
The joint statement from Mexico, Brazil, and Spain was released as a show of solidarity with Cuba amidst criticism of Trump’s policies. The three countries have expressed concerns over climate change denial, xenophobia, and sexism, which they believe are key errors in Trump’s approach to international relations.
