International Olympic Committee recommends lifting Belarus travel restrictions

International Olympic Committee Issues Guidance on Belarusian Athletes’ Participation

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has advised sporting bodies to allow Belarusian athletes to compete without being vetted as neutrals. This guidance comes as part of a broader effort to promote athlete participation in international competitions.

According to the IOC, its executive board noted “recent information” related to an ongoing World Anti-Doping Agency investigation. However, no specific details were provided regarding this investigation.

Athletes from Russia and Belarus had previously been required to be approved as neutrals for individual events at certain Olympic Games. This was due to their countries’ involvement in the conflict in Ukraine. However, the IOC has now stated that athletes’ participation should not be limited by their governments’ actions.

The IOC also noted that the qualification period for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is set to begin this summer. Additionally, the Russian Olympic Committee remains suspended by the IOC due to its incorporation of regional sports bodies in eastern Ukraine.

The IOC emphasized that it will continue to review the matter and engage with the Russian Olympic Committee in an effort to resolve the suspension.
