Iran Accepts Two-Week Ceasefire Agreement with US
Tehran has accepted a two-week ceasefire agreement with the United States, paving the way for peace negotiations between the two countries. The agreement was announced by US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, who stated that he would suspend military operations if Iran fully reopened the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s foreign minister confirmed that safe passage through the critical waterway will be coordinated with Iranian armed forces during the two-week period. Talks are scheduled to begin on Friday in Pakistan, where Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had urged Trump to extend his negotiation deadline and called on Iran to restore access to the strait.
Iranian officials have hailed the ceasefire as a “victory”, citing national unity and patience as key factors in securing the agreement. They claim that Trump’s acknowledgement of progress on major points of contention validates their position, and note that the initial US-Israeli strategy failed to collapse the Iranian government through targeted assassinations of leadership.
The agreement was reached after weeks of conflict, during which Iran demonstrated its capability to sustain military operations and defend itself indefinitely. The terms of the agreement include the “perfectly taken care of” uranium stockpiles, as stated by Trump in a telephone interview with AFP news agency.
Despite the truce, Democratic lawmakers have expressed their intention to pursue Trump’s impeachment, citing his rhetoric towards Iran as “genocidal” and “unhinged”.
