Iran Appoints New Head of Supreme National Security Council
Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr has been appointed as the successor to Ali Larijani, who was killed in an air strike last week, as the head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC). Zolghadr, a former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander and secretary of the advisory Expediency Council since 2023, will assume the role amidst external US-Israeli pressures and internal unrest.
Zolghadr has extensive credentials in security decision-making, having held senior military and security roles including chief of the IRGC Joint Staff for eight years and deputy commander-in-chief for another eight years. He also holds a series of high-level political and judicial positions.
The appointment reflects Tehran’s need for someone capable of filling the void left by Larijani, who was widely regarded as an experienced figure within the governing system. Zolghadr’s selection is part of a longer process to identify a figure with specific qualities required for the SNSC leadership post.
As head of the SNSC, Zolghadr will navigate a complex security situation shaped by military pressure from the United States and Israel, as well as domestic challenges. The country continues to face strikes throughout the country, including in western and northwestern Iran, and has arrested hundreds of people accused of cooperating with foreign entities.
Zolghadr’s appointment also places him at the forefront of negotiations with the US to end the war. His approval will be required for any agreements or decisions made during these talks. The new head of the SNSC will face an early test in managing the delicate balance between external military pressure and internal security efforts.
