Tehran Celebrates Islamic Republic Day Amid Ongoing Conflict
Government supporters gathered in the streets of Tehran on Tuesday night to mark the anniversary of a 1979 referendum that solidified the Islamic Republic’s hold on power. The event coincided with ongoing military actions by the United States and Israel, which targeted sites in Iran.
President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi were among officials who participated in pro-establishment rallies. On Wednesday morning, Washington bombed the site of the former US embassy in Tehran, causing destruction and debris. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was present at the scene.
Later on Wednesday afternoon, authorities raised Iran’s tallest and heaviest flag in downtown Tehran. Festivities began on Tuesday night and are expected to continue on Wednesday evening. Political, military, and religious leaders emphasized the need for security measures to prevent dissent and incitement towards regime change from opponents.
Araghchi stated that he joined the rally to “gain spirit” and encouragement. President Pezeshkian was seen taking photos with people while flanked by masked bodyguards. Hassan Khomeini, son of Ruhollah Khomeini, emphasized the importance of remaining on the streets every night until the conflict is resolved.
In various cities, people chanted slogans such as “Death to America” and “Death to Israel,” along with religious chants. The Basij forces of the IRGC patrolled the streets, while paramilitary groups from Iraq’s Hashd al-Shaabi were also present. Authorities called for group marches and waved flags.
Religious singers and eulogists performed songs that drew on revered figures in Shia Islam. The presence of Iraqi nationals was confirmed by Hamid al-Hosseini, a senior clerical figure affiliated with the IRGC. They were reportedly providing “humanitarian assistance” to the Iranian people.
The celebrations come days after Hashd al-Shaabi fighters delivered humanitarian aid in southwestern Iran’s Khuzestan region.
