Iran calls for evidence in connection with reported protest killings

Iranian Government Releases List of 3,117 “Victims” Amid Ongoing Protests

Tehran, Iran - The Iranian government has released a list of 3,117 individuals, described as “victims of recent terrorist operation,” including approximately 200 security personnel. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the list is accurate and invited anyone to share evidence disputing its accuracy.

The United States President, Donald Trump, previously stated that 32,000 people were killed during the protests. The Iranian foreign minister has also been speaking with US media outlets to discuss a potential agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.

Mai Sato, UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran, estimates that more than 20,000 civilians may have been killed, while HRANA reports over 7,000 documented deaths and nearly 12,000 cases under investigation. A joint statement by 30 special rapporteurs and international human rights experts called for Iranian authorities to disclose the fate of arrested individuals and halt related death sentences.

The discrepancy between official figures and grassroots estimates has led to concerns about the accuracy of the government’s data. The experts emphasized that the vast majority of those detained or killed are ordinary people, including children, from diverse backgrounds. Iranian state media have been accused of broadcasting what appear to be forced confessions.

In related news, some students in Tehran returned to university campuses for the first time, amid a heightened security atmosphere and clashes between students and paramilitary Basij students affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
