Iran Conflict Enters 56th Day Under Trump-Extended Ceasefire
April 24, 2026 • Al Jazeera
US President Donald Trump has announced a three-week extension to the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon following talks at the White House with Israeli and Lebanese envoys.
The agreement extends the current ceasefire period by 21 days, bringing it to a total of six weeks. The extension was reportedly reached after discussions between Trump, Israeli officials, and their Lebanese counterparts.
According to reports, Trump stated that he is willing to negotiate an “everlasting” agreement with Iran, although he also expressed confidence in his ability to reach a deal at any time. In recent days, tensions have remained high across the region, with an Israeli strike resulting in the deaths of three people in southern Lebanon.
Senior officials in Tehran have criticized Washington for its role in stalled negotiations, citing the US naval blockade of Iranian ports as a contributing factor. The blockade has been in place since 2012 and restricts access to Iranian shipping lanes.
The extension of the ceasefire is seen as a temporary measure aimed at reducing violence in the region. Further developments on the situation are expected in the coming days.
