Iran Conflict Raises Concerns Among BRICS Nations Over Global Economic Stability

BRICS Foreign Ministers Meet in New Delhi, Fail to Reach Consensus on US-Israeli War on Iran

A two-day meeting of BRICS foreign ministers in New Delhi concluded without a joint position on the conflict involving the United States and Israel. The bloc’s outcome document acknowledged that differing views remained among members.

The meeting, chaired by Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, marked the first major ministerial engagement under India’s 2026 BRICS presidency. The 10-member grouping of emerging economies coordinates on economic and security issues while seeking a greater voice for the Global South in institutions dominated by Western powers.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran, which began on February 28. Diplomatic efforts, including Pakistan-mediated talks in Islamabad last month, have stalled. The US also imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports on April 13.

At the meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urged BRICS members to explicitly condemn what he described as US and Israeli “violations of international law” and to take concrete action to halt warmongering. He criticized the UAE for not condemning an attack on a school in Minab city and accused the country of allowing the US to use Emirati territory to launch attacks on Iran.

The UAE’s representative, Khalifa bin Shaheen Al Marar, used his statement to single out Iran and called for condemnation of Iranian actions. The exchange exposed the deepest fault line within the expanded bloc, which includes both Iran and the UAE as full members despite their differing positions on the conflict.

A leaders’ summit is scheduled for September in India.
