US-Iran Negotiations Continue Amid Tensions
Negotiations between Iran and the United States continue through intermediaries, with no clear outcome in sight. The US military reported striking missile launch sites and Iranian boats attempting to place mines in southern waters, prompting a response from Iranian forces. Despite this, the fragile ceasefire that has been in place since April 8 remains intact.
Market sentiment in Tehran appears to be optimistic about an impending agreement, with Iran’s national currency increasing by over 5 percent this week. The rial currently stands at approximately 1.73 million against the US dollar, close to its all-time low set last month. The main index of the Tehran Stock Exchange has also seen significant gains, rising above 4 million points on Tuesday morning.
The Iranian economy is under pressure due to local mismanagement and external factors, including a naval blockade of southern ports and reduced imports from the UAE. This has led to concerns about supply chain disruptions and inflation. The government has focused on procuring essential goods such as food and medicine to mitigate the impact of the crisis.
State-run media reported that President Masoud Pezeshkian ordered preparations to reinstate the global internet, which was imposed by the authorities during the nationwide shutdown. However, there is no confirmation from the Supreme National Security Council regarding this decision.
Residents in Tehran expressed varying opinions on the situation, with some expressing hope for a breakthrough and others expressing concern about the ongoing tensions. A retired construction engineer stated that any end to the current state of uncertainty would be welcome, while an art teacher believed that an agreement between Iran and the US could put the country in a stronger position.
A student expressed skepticism about the potential benefits of a memorandum of understanding, stating that it may not guarantee a secure future for the Iranian population.
