Iran Marks 1979 Revolution Anniversary with Calls for National Unity

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has addressed a large public ceremony in Tehran to commemorate the 47th anniversary of the founding of the Islamic Republic. The event drew crowds from across the country, demonstrating support for the government amidst challenging times.

Pezeshkian emphasized national unity in the face of external threats and acknowledged his government’s shortcomings. He stated that Iran is willing to engage in nuclear talks with other nations, including the United States, while emphasizing the need for verification measures.

In a speech, Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran does not seek nuclear weapons and expressed willingness to negotiate on issues such as nuclear enrichment and ballistic missiles. However, he noted that “high walls of mistrust” created by the US and Europe hindered progress in these talks.

Regarding recent protests, which began over economic concerns and escalated into broader grievances against the government, Pezeshkian apologized for his administration’s shortcomings. He stated that Iran is making efforts to address the issues and is open to listening to the public’s voice.

Ali Akbar Dareini, a researcher at the Centre for Strategic Studies, commented on Pezeshkian’s speech, suggesting it indicates Iran’s openness to a fair and balanced deal with the US. However, he also noted that Iran will resist unrealistic demands from Washington.

The anniversary commemorations took place amidst significant internal divisions in Iran, following the government’s crackdown on protests earlier this year, which resulted in thousands of deaths. The country is also facing external threats from the US, including potential military attacks if it does not comply with Washington’s demands.

In related news, US President Donald Trump has continued to threaten Tehran with military action unless Iran accedes to his demands. Reports suggest that Trump may consider sending another aircraft carrier group to the region.

The event in Azadi Square featured prominent symbols of anti-US and anti-Israeli sentiment, as well as senior political, military, and religious figures. The commemorations were attended by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had called on Iranians to participate in the celebrations.
