US-Iran Nuclear Talks to Resume in Geneva
A new round of talks between the United States and Iran is scheduled to take place in Geneva. The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated its commitment to finding a diplomatic solution with the US on its nuclear program.
According to Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, any military action by the US would be considered an “act of aggression” that would prompt Iran’s response. Baghaei stated that Iran is prepared to defend itself if necessary.
US President Donald Trump has said he is considering a limited strike on Iran if Tehran does not reach a deal with the US. Trump made this statement in response to a question from a reporter on Friday.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed optimism about the talks, stating that they have produced “encouraging signals”. However, he also warned that Iran is prepared for any scenario.
The two countries concluded a second round of indirect talks in Switzerland under Omani mediation. A third round of indirect talks is scheduled for Thursday in Geneva, but the US has yet to confirm.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has been leading the negotiations for Iran, while the US is represented by envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Baghaei dismissed claims of a temporary agreement with Washington, stating that speculation on the nuclear talks is not uncommon. He emphasized that any negotiation process requires joint action and goodwill from both sides.
The Trump administration has been intensifying its military build-up in the region during the talks with Iran. In an interview, Witkoff stated that Trump was wondering why Iran had not “capitulated” in the face of the military deployment.
Baghaei stressed that Iranians have never capitulated at any point in their history and left it to the Iranian people and political elites to decide on the country’s negotiating approach.
