Protests Erupt in Iran Over Economic Conditions
Multiple deaths and an internet blackout have resulted from the ongoing crackdown on protests in Iran. The demonstrations, which began on December 28, 2025, initially centered on soaring prices in the country. Following a record low against the US dollar, the rial plummeted to over 1.4 million to $1, triggering steep inflation and food price increases.
The economic situation has been exacerbated by various factors, including a 12-day war with Israel in June 2025, which caused infrastructural damage, and the re-imposition of UN sanctions on Iran in September 2025 due to its nuclear program. Additionally, the country’s new fuel subsidy system, introduced in December, has raised prices for households.
Protesters have expressed frustration with the government’s handling of economic issues, citing rising costs for goods such as dairy products and other essential items. Chants by protesters initially focused on economic grievances but have since shifted to opposition to the clerical establishment and calls for a return to the monarchy.
Some supporters of Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of deposed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, have begun chanting in support of his candidacy, with many advocating for a referendum on the country’s government structure. The protests have been building since the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody in 2022, which sparked demands for democracy and opposition to the Islamic government’s strict laws.
The situation remains fluid, with officials reassessing fuel prices every three months and food prices expected to rise further due to the Central Bank’s recent decision to scrap a preferential dollar-rial rate.
