Protests Over Inflation Continue in Iran, Resulting in Multiple Fatalities
At least five people have been killed as demonstrations over rising costs of living in Iran spread across the country. Protests began peacefully in Tehran before spreading to other areas, including Azna in Lorestan province and Lordegan in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province.
According to reports from Iranian state media, at least three people were killed and 17 others injured during protests in Azna. Videos shared online showed objects ablaze and gunfire echoing as protesters shouted slogans. In Lordegan, two people were reportedly killed, with protesters throwing stones at administrative buildings, including the provincial governor’s office.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has acknowledged protesters’ “legitimate grievances” over inflation, calling on the government to take action to improve the economic situation. He stated that failure to address the issue could lead to severe consequences.
Government officials have promised to hold a dialogue with representatives of trade unions and merchants, while warning against exploiting the protests for chaos. The authorities have also warned that any attempts to turn economic protests into tools of insecurity will be met with a “firm” response.
The unrest comes amid an extended weekend in Iran, which was declared due to cold weather. Reports have also emerged of arrests made by Iranian security forces, including those affiliated with groups hostile to the Islamic Republic based in the United States and Europe.
