US President Donald Trump Announces Possible Deal with Iran
Iranian officials have referenced historical events in the Middle East region, drawing parallels between past conflicts and the current standoff with the US. The comments come as both sides claim a potential deal to end their 66-day conflict.
According to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, the Roman Empire’s defeat of Persia in the third century is being cited as an example of Iran’s resilience against invading forces. An image of Roman Emperor Valerian after his capture by King Shapur I in 260 has been shared on social media to evoke nationalist sentiments.
Iran also commemorated the anniversary of its eight-year war with Iraq from 1980 to 1988, which ended with the recapture of Khorramshahr in 1982. The city’s liberation is seen as a symbol of Iran’s long history of resistance and determination to maintain sovereignty over its lands.
Iranian officials have used this historical event to signal their continued resolve to defend against US aggression in the region. Commander-in-chief Ahmad Vahidi stated that the liberation of Khorramshahr serves as a model for future victories, including the liberation of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Israeli regime.
Moderate President Masoud Pezeshkian linked the event to the current standoff, stating that Iran’s resistance is rooted in its culture. Adviser Mohammad Mokhber noted that former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and US President Donald Trump failed to fully recognize Iran’s power when starting a war.
Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi emphasized the country’s right to legitimate defense under the UN Charter, stating that Tehran is following a logic of “peace-seeking paired with power, diplomacy paired with integrity and decisive defense”.
