FIFA Congress to Address Geopolitical Tensions and Logistical Issues Ahead of World Cup
A gathering of approximately 1,600 delegates from over 200 member associations is set to take place in Canada for FIFA’s 76th Congress. The event, scheduled to occur weeks before the North American nation cohosts the World Cup with the United States and Mexico, will focus on operational and financial issues related to the upcoming tournament.
The congress will also address human rights concerns and logistical challenges. Iranian football officials were initially set to attend the meeting but departed from Canada earlier in the week due to mistreatment by immigration officials. The delegation had arrived at Toronto’s Pearson airport with valid visas but returned to Turkey upon arrival, citing unacceptable behavior by immigration officials.
Canada has listed Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, and President Mehdi Taj was denied entry due to alleged ties with the IRGC. Human rights group Amnesty International has called on FIFA President Gianni Infantino to outline measures ensuring human rights will be safeguarded during the World Cup.
The congress will bring together representatives of all 211 FIFA member associations to discuss key decisions regarding world football governance, finances, and regulations. The event is expected to focus on logistical issues surrounding the tournament, as well as the unresolved question of Russia’s international ban.
Representatives from over 120 civil society groups have issued a travel advisory for foreigners attending the World Cup in the US due to concerns about human rights. Fans are also using the congress to raise awareness about the #SaveTheCaps campaign against the potential relocation of the Vancouver Whitecaps soccer team to Las Vegas.
