Iran War Day 81: US Delays Attack, Iran Vows Resistance
May 19, 2026 • Al Jazeera
US President Donald Trump has announced that he postponed a scheduled attack on Iran following requests from leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The move comes as renewed diplomatic efforts are underway between Washington and Tehran.
According to Trump, “serious negotiations” are currently taking place behind the scenes. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has responded by stating that his country’s participation in talks is a matter of national dignity and authority.
Pezeshkian also rejected suggestions that Iran was backing down under pressure, saying “dialogue does not mean surrender”. He emphasized that Iran entered negotiations with “dignity, authority, and the preservation of the nation’s rights”.
Separately, violence continues to escalate in Lebanon. Local reports indicate that at least seven people were killed on Monday, bringing the death toll to over 3,000 since Israeli attacks began.
A US-brokered extension of a ceasefire has been put in place, but it appears to have had little impact on the situation. The ongoing conflict remains a pressing concern for regional stability and international relations.
