Iran Womens Football Team Honored After Successful Asylum Bid at Asian Cup

Iranian National Women’s Football Team Returns Home After Australia Asylum Claims

The Iranian national women’s football team returned to their home country on Wednesday after several members had sought asylum in Australia earlier this month. The team, including captain Zahra Ghanbari, arrived at Valiasr Square in central Tehran, where a welcome ceremony was held.

According to reports, six players and one backroom staff member had traveled to Australia for the Women’s Asian Cup and later made asylum claims, prompting criticism from hardliners in Iran. However, five of them later changed their minds and returned home along with the rest of the team.

The Iranian authorities have stated that they offered the players “houses, cars, money, promises of contracts with professional clubs, as well as humanitarian visas” to persuade them to withdraw their asylum claims. In contrast, activists have accused Iranian authorities of pressuring the women’s families, including summoning their parents for interrogation.

A welcome ceremony was held in Valiasr Square, where thousands of people gathered to greet the team. The event featured a giant billboard with the slogan “My Choice. My Homeland” and a stage appearance by Iranian football federation President Mehdi Taj. Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani also addressed the team members, welcoming them back to Iran.

Two squad members remain in Australia, but the majority of the team arrived in Iran after a long journey home via Malaysia, Oman, and Turkey. The incident has sparked international concern amid tensions between the US and Israel regarding Iran.
