US-based Iranian Dissidents Express Concerns Over Safety Amid Escalating Tensions with Iran
A group of Iranian dissidents living in the United States have expressed concerns about their safety following recent developments in the conflict between Iran and Israel. The situation has heightened tensions, with some fearing retribution against those who have spoken out against the Iranian government.
Roozbeh Farahanipour, a 54-year-old businessman and activist, has lived in exile in the US since 2000 after fleeing a death sentence in Iran. Despite being far from his native country, Farahanipour still faces threats to his safety. He attributes this to his activism, which he believes is closely tied to his Iranian heritage.
In recent months, Farahanipour has experienced incidents that suggest his activism may be linked to the Iranian government’s actions. For example, gunfire shattered the door of one of his restaurants in 2022 after he testified before the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors condemning Iran’s violent crackdown on protesters.
Negar Razavi, a scholar at Princeton University’s Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Iran and Persian Gulf Studies, notes that Iranian dissidents in the US are experiencing an atmosphere of “dual fear”. They fear neither their safety here nor their safety back home. Razavi points out that even in the US, there is no guarantee of sanctuary.
The Trump administration has deported several groups of Iranians to Iran in recent months, despite concerns they may face persecution. This has raised fears among Iranian dissidents in the US about potential retribution against them and their family members in Iran.
As the conflict between Iran and Israel continues, Farahanipour expresses concerns that dissidents in the US could find their family and financial interests in Iran targeted as retribution. Razavi notes that while critics in the US may be insulated from the reach of Iran’s armed forces, their family members in Iran remain vulnerable to threats.
The situation highlights the complexities and uncertainties faced by Iranian dissidents living abroad, who must navigate multiple risks and fears.
