Iranian Human Rights Activist Transferred to Hospital Due to Health Decline
Narges Mohammadi, a prominent Iranian human rights activist who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, has been transferred from prison to a hospital due to a significant decline in her health. According to her foundation, Mohammadi experienced two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and suffered a severe cardiac crisis.
Mohammadi’s lawyers had previously reported that she appeared pale, underweight, and required assistance walking after fainting twice in prison on Friday. Her lawyers also stated that she was believed to have suffered a heart attack in late March. The foundation announced that Mohammadi’s condition could not be managed on-site by prison doctors.
Mohammadi has been imprisoned since December 12, following her arrest during a visit to the eastern Iranian city of Mashhad. In February, she was sentenced to over seven years in prison, with six years attributed to charges of “gathering and collusion to commit crimes.” Her family had previously reported that her health was deteriorating in prison, citing an alleged beating she endured during her arrest.
The Nobel committee condemned the “ongoing life-threatening mistreatment” of Mohammadi in a statement in February. The Iranian government has not commented on the allegations. Prior to her arrest, Mohammadi had been serving a sentence of 13 years and nine months on charges of collusion against state security and propaganda against Iran’s government.
