Iranians face uncertainty as country teeters between conflict and stalemate

Tehran Residents Face Uncertainty Amid Ongoing Conflict

In eastern Tehran, residents have been left to pick up the pieces after recent bombardment. The area remains largely untouched, with no signs of reconstruction in sight. Sajjad, a young man in his twenties, stands before the ruins of his father’s home, expressing his concern about who will rebuild the damaged structures.

The fragile truce between the United States and Iran has brought an end to air attacks, but the city’s residents are still grappling with the consequences of the conflict. Labourers have been working to repair damaged buildings, while others remain frozen in time. Mohammad, a 39-year-old architect, notes that the cost of building a single unit has increased significantly due to the US-imposed maritime blockade and damage to domestic steel companies.

The country’s currency has also suffered, further exacerbating the economic crisis. Authorities have informed displaced residents that they must either rebuild their properties themselves or wait for post-war public tenders. Sajjad expresses his fear that if the war were to resume, everything he builds would be a new target.

Maryam, a 52-year-old resident, has been struggling to find suitable housing after her home was destroyed in the first wave of strikes. She recently received an eviction notice despite receiving a rental loan from the government. Ashkbous, a 43-year-old administrative employee at the Ministry of Health, notes that government price controls have prevented mass food shortages, but daily price fluctuations for essential goods are pushing low-income families to the brink.

Fereydoun, a 71-year-old trader, reports that rerouted shipments have severely disrupted delivery schedules and skyrocketed costs, forcing customers to settle for cheaper alternatives. Yousra, a 47-year-old resident, describes her experience as “psychological and economic attrition,” feeling caught between the uncertainty of war and the hope for peace.

As Tehran’s residents navigate the ongoing conflict, they face significant challenges in rebuilding their lives and accessing basic necessities. The city remains in a state of suspended reality, with no clear end in sight to the uncertainty that has gripped its residents.
