Russia and China Condemn US-Israeli Attack on Iran
Russia and China have issued joint statements condemning the recent US-Israeli attack on Iran, which has resulted in over 1,000 fatalities. The two nations have labeled the assault as a “clear violation of international law.” Russian President Vladimir Putin described the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as a “cynical violation of all norms of human morals.”
China’s Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi also expressed his concerns, stating that “force cannot truly solve problems” and urging all parties to avoid further escalation. Russia and China have jointly requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
The close relationship between Iran, Russia, and China is evident in their bilateral agreements and joint military exercises. In January 2025, Russia and Iran signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty covering areas such as trade, military cooperation, science, culture, and education. The agreement deepened defence and intelligence coordination and supported projects like transport corridors linking Russia to the Gulf through Iran.
However, despite their strong rhetoric, neither Russia nor China has indicated a willingness to intervene militarily in support of Iran. A former Russian diplomat noted that Russia’s 2024 mutual defence treaty with North Korea is more binding than its agreement with Iran, which only mentions abstaining from hostile actions in case the other side is engaged in conflict.
China and Iran have also signed several agreements aimed at expanding their cooperation in areas such as energy and trade. A Chinese expert stated that the relationship between China and Iran is viewed as pragmatic and stable, but noted that Beijing has established clear limits on military involvement.
