Irans Economy Strained by War, Fueling Economic Uncertainty and Job Losses

Tehran, Iran – The Iranian economy continues to face significant challenges due to ongoing conflicts with the US and Israel. As a result, prices for various essential items have surged, leading to widespread economic hardship.
According to reports, millions of jobs have been lost or are on pause as the war causes escalating economic damage. Food, medicine, cars, electrical devices, and petrochemical products are among the items that have seen significant price increases. The national currency, the rial, has reached an all-time low of 1.84 million against the US dollar in the open market.
The situation is further complicated by a near-total internet shutdown imposed by the authorities in Tehran, which has limited access to information and exacerbated market volatility. Currency deals are scarce, and vendors are taking advantage of the uncertainty to raise prices at unprecedented levels.
For example, a 256GB iPhone 17 Pro Max, priced at $1,200 in the US, is being sold for close to 5 billion rials ($2,750) by some shops in the capital. Similarly, a Peugeot 206 car is being offered at an eye-watering 30 billion rials ($16,500).
The government has implemented subsidies worth just less than $10 per month per person towards food and essentials, but this has not been enough to mitigate the effects of the economic crisis. A recent statement by Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei emphasized the need for Iran to “disappoint and defeat enemies” in an economic and cultural struggle.
The government has also reported that many major companies have been forced to lay off employees due to the economic downturn. The situation remains uncertain, with prices continuing to rise and vendors taking advantage of market volatility.
