US Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, has denied reports in the US media that he made a new push to resume nuclear talks with Washington. According to The Wall Street Journal, Larijani had allegedly made this move through Omani mediators following the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a joint attack by the US and Israel on Saturday.
Larijani has since posted on X, stating that Iran will not negotiate with the United States. He also criticized former US President Donald Trump, saying he plunged the Middle East into chaos with his “delusional fantasies”. Larijani claimed that Trump’s policies prioritized Israel’s interests over those of the US, resulting in increased American casualties.
The US and Israel have continued their attacks across Iran since Saturday, with at least three service members killed and five others seriously wounded. The US Central Command has confirmed this information. In response to the assault, Iran has launched attacks targeting US assets across the Middle East.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has condemned the killing of Khamenei as a “cowardly act of terror” and described the attacks as a “dangerous and unprecedented escalation”. Al Jazeera’s Rosiland Jordan reported that there have been conflicting messages from within the Trump administration regarding possible off-ramps for negotiations.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Dan Caine will address the press on Monday, providing an update on the military campaign. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also scheduled to brief legislators about the intelligence leading up to the decision to go to war against Iran.
