Irans Gunboat Fires on Container Ship Off Oman Coast

Incident Involving Iranian Gunboat and Container Vessel Occurs Off Coast of Oman

A British maritime monitoring agency has reported an incident in which a gunboat from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired on a container vessel near the coast of Oman. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) centre stated that the ship’s captain reported being approached by the IRGC vessel before shots were fired, causing significant damage to the bridge.

According to reports, no fires or environmental impact were reported, and all crew members were safe. The incident occurred hours after US President Donald Trump announced he would extend a ceasefire with Iran. However, it is unclear whether this decision was made in response to the incident.

The ship in question was sailing under a Liberian flag and had been informed it had permission to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important waterways. Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that the vessel had ignored warnings issued by Iran’s armed forces.

Trump earlier announced he would delay a planned military attack on Iran after requests from Pakistan’s army chief and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He stated that the decision was made due to Iran’s government being “seriously fractured” and needing time to present a unified position.

The US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will remain in place, with Trump ordering the military to stay “ready and able”. Al Jazeera reported that Iranian officials are sending mixed messages over the ceasefire and negotiations.
