Irans Leadership Weighs Pros and Cons of Emerging US Deal

Tehran, Iran – Iranian authorities have reaffirmed their stance against surrendering to US demands, but subtle differences exist among various factions. Over three months into the conflict, Washington and Tehran remain at an impasse on key issues.

The dispute centers on international transit through the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran insisting on control over the waterway and the US blockade of Iranian ports. Additionally, a longer-term deal on nuclear enrichment and the removal of highly enriched uranium from Iran is uncertain. The lifting of US and United Nations sanctions on Iran also hangs in the balance.

Tensions between the US military and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have escalated, with Tehran accusing Washington of violating the April ceasefire agreement. Reports suggest an explosion in an apartment building in Tehran’s Andisheh was a gas leak, contrary to claims by Israeli media that it was a targeted assassination.

Iran’s top leaders, including Supreme Leader-designate Ebrahim Raisi and IRGC commanders, have emphasized the country’s refusal to surrender. However, differences in their postures persist.

Ebrahim Raisi has issued written messages outlining his vision for Iran’s future, emphasizing the importance of national assets such as nuclear and missile programs. He has also called on supporters and armed forces to continue protests against the US and Israel.

IRGC commanders have signaled a firm stance against major concessions to President Donald Trump, focusing on deterrence and dominance in any escalation. Ahmad Vahidi, commander-in-chief of the IRGC, has warned of a “destructive response” if the war restarts. Ali Abdollahi, commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, has emphasized the armed forces’ role in securing the Strait of Hormuz.

Majid Mousavi, leader of the aerospace division of the IRGC, has recalled slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s words on negotiating with the enemy. Mohammad Ali Jafari, former chief commander of the IRGC, now heads the Baqiatallah Headquarters and continues to shape Iran’s military strategy.

The leadership and institutions in Iran continue to emphasize their commitment to resisting US demands, but subtle differences in approach persist among various factions.
