US Diplomats Meet with Iranian Counterparts in Geneva Talks
American diplomats and their Iranian counterparts met in Geneva last week as part of ongoing negotiations mediated by Oman. The talks aimed to address outstanding issues between the two countries.
According to reports, both sides expressed differing opinions on the progress made during the discussions. The Iranians stated that “good progress” had been achieved, while the Americans claimed there was only “a little progress”. US President Donald Trump also reiterated his threat to strike Iran if necessary.
In recent weeks, the United States has increased its military presence in the Middle East, sparking concerns about an imminent attack on Iran. Some observers have suggested that these talks may be a tactic to buy time for the US to prepare for such an event.
Iran’s options for addressing US aggression are being debated. The country’s experience with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) has shown that diplomatic engagement can be complex and unpredictable. The JCPOA, signed by the US, China, Russia, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, the European Union, and Iran in 2015, provided sanctions relief in exchange for full transparency of the Iranian nuclear programme.
However, the US withdrew from the agreement in 2018, reimposing maximum pressure sanctions aimed at crippling Iran’s economy. This move highlighted the challenges of relying on American promises. The current negotiations are taking place against the backdrop of a polarized US political climate, where a president’s signature is only valid until the next election.
The ongoing talks have raised concerns about the US’s intentions and the potential for further pressure on Iran. Some analysts have suggested that the US may be using these negotiations as a facade to lull adversaries into a false sense of security. The special relationship between the US and Israel has also been cited as a factor in shaping Washington’s approach towards Iran, with Trump’s goal being to ensure that Iran can never fully comply with his demands.
