Iran’s Military Strategy Shifted Following 12-Day War with Israel
Iran has revised its military strategy since the recent conflict with Israel, according to defence analysts. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a significant offensive operation against occupied lands and US bases in the Gulf region on Monday.
Following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran vowed revenge and claimed responsibility for bombing US military assets across the Gulf region on Sunday. The army chief, Amir Hatami, pledged to continue defending the country.
Iran’s military power is complex and opaque, with multiple intelligence services and layered command structures that answer directly to the supreme leader. The nation operates parallel armies, including the Artesh and IRGC, which have distinct roles in territorial defence, airspace, and conventional warfare.
Defence analysts note that Iran’s military strategy is influenced by its political structure, aiming to safeguard its territorial integrity and prevent foreign intervention. Following the US-Israeli assault on Saturday, Tehran retaliated with Shahed drones and high-speed ballistic missiles across the Gulf region.
The conflict resulted in significant damage to civilian infrastructure, including Dubai’s airport, where at least one person was killed and seven wounded. In Israel, nine people were killed and over 20 injured in a missile strike on the town of Beit Shemesh.
Iran has targeted US military bases in the past, but defence analysts suggest that its revised strategy is more aggressive and focused on survival. The nation’s complex military structure is designed to safeguard against external and internal threats, including coups.
