US Naval Base in Bahrain Sustained Significant Damage During Iran Conflict

The acting secretary of the US Navy, Hung Cao, has acknowledged that a key military installation in Bahrain suffered severe damage during recent months of fighting with Iran. The base, which serves as the headquarters for the US Fifth Fleet and the US Naval Forces Central Command, was targeted by Iranian forces on multiple occasions.

According to Cao, the facility sustained significant damage, including damage to its command centre and at least a dozen other buildings. The Navy is currently evaluating options for the base’s future, including whether to repair or replace it.

The damage to the base has also affected operations involving the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, leaving the crew without a suitable place to dock. The nearly nine-month deployment of the ship in the Middle East has taken a toll on the crew, with some sailors experiencing mental health issues and attempting to jump overboard.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded to Cao’s admission by stating that Iran’s Armed Forces had indeed targeted the US facility, causing significant damage. The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also released a statement claiming responsibility for the attacks on the Al-Azraq base in Jordan, which hosts US military assets and personnel.

The US bases in the Middle East have come under repeated attack by Iran, raising questions about their sustainability. The incident highlights the risks faced by US military personnel and installations in the region.
