Irans Oil Storage Levels Reach Critical Point, Production Cuts Possible

US Naval Blockade of Hormuz Raises Concerns Over Iranian Oil Production

The United States’ naval blockade of Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz has sparked concerns among experts that Iran may be forced to scale back its oil production. The blockade, which began on April 13, restricts access to the strait, a narrow channel connecting the Gulf to the open ocean, where 20% of the world’s oil supplies are transported.

According to data and analytics company Kpler, if the blockade persists, Iran may run out of crude storage capacity within 12-22 days. This could lead to a reduction in oil production as the country relies on storage facilities at Kharg Island, where most of its oil is exported. United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned that storage capacity at Kharg Island will be full “in a matter of days”.

Iran’s oil exports have increased since Tehran closed the Strait of Hormuz to other shipping. The country currently exports 90% of its crude oil via Kharg Island, and most of its exports are now being stored due to the blockade. Satellite data show that Iran’s oil storage capacity has risen sharply since the US blockade began.

The US naval blockade is aimed at curbing Iran’s oil revenues, which have increased since Tehran closed the Strait of Hormuz. The blockade restricts access to the strait, making it difficult for Iranian vessels to export their oil. Iran’s domestic refineries have a production capacity of 2.6 million barrels per day.

The situation has led to tensions between Iran and the US, with both sides accusing each other of violating international law. Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref has stated that “the security of the Strait of Hormuz is not free” and that the choice is clear: either a free oil market for all or significant costs for everyone.

The blockade remains in place, and its impact on Iranian oil production and exports continues to be monitored by experts.
