Irans Pezeshkian to Implement Economic Overhaul Amid Growing Protests

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has spoken in a televised interview on state television, addressing the ongoing nationwide demonstrations that have resulted in dozens of deaths. The president stated that his administration is committed to resolving Iran’s economic issues and is willing to engage with the public.

Pezeshkian acknowledged that people are concerned about the current economic situation, including high inflation and a devalued currency. He emphasized the need for dialogue and resolution, but also warned against allowing groups of rioters to disrupt the country.

The president accused the United States and Israel of being involved in the unrest, stating that they are trying to “sow chaos and disorder”. He called on Iranians to distance themselves from what he described as “rioters and terrorists”.

Iranian officials have been attempting to distinguish between protesters and those they describe as foreign-trained rioters. Senior officials have acknowledged public anger over economic concerns, including soaring prices and high inflation.

State media reported that 109 security personnel have been killed during the protests. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf reinforced this distinction, stating that Iran recognizes peaceful protests but will stand against “terrorists”.

US President Donald Trump recently made comments on social media suggesting possible military action if Iranian authorities kill demonstrators. In response, Qalibaf warned Washington that Iran would target occupied territories and US bases and ships in the event of an attack.

The Ministry of Interior reported that the unrest is subsiding, while the attorney general warned participants they could face capital punishment. A nationwide internet blackout has persisted for over 60 hours, according to monitoring groups. Human rights organizations have reported at least 51 protesters killed by security forces, with hundreds more injured and mass arrests conducted across the country.
