US Proposes Ceasefire Deal to Iran, Officials Indicate Divide Remains
The United States has submitted a 14-point document to Iran, which includes proposals for ending the war between the two countries. The proposal requires Iran to agree not to develop a nuclear weapon and halt all enrichment of uranium for at least 12 years. In return, the US would gradually lift sanctions and release billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets.
Iran has yet to formally respond to the latest US plan, but officials indicate that a large divide remains between the two sides. The proposal follows one submitted by Iran via mediator Pakistan last week. Iranian lawmakers have expressed skepticism about the US proposal, with some describing it as “more of an American wish-list than a reality.”
The situation has escalated in recent days, with both sides exchanging fire in the Strait of Hormuz. On Thursday, US forces targeted an Iranian oil tanker and a second vessel near the United Arab Emirates’ Fujairah port, while US air strikes hit civilian areas in southern Iran. Iranian air defences were also active over western Tehran.
Despite the exchange of fire, neither side has yet announced the collapse of the ceasefire, which has been in place since April 8. Iranian officials are still reviewing the US proposal, with some expressing concerns that several US demands are unreasonable and maximalist.
The situation remains fluid, with both sides continuing to engage in diplomatic efforts. The outcome of these negotiations is uncertain, and it is unclear how Iran will respond to the latest US proposal.
