Irans Response to Latest US Ceasefire Proposal Under Scrutiny

US Sends 14-Point Document to Iran, Proposal for Ceasefire Remains Under Review

The United States has submitted a 14-point document to Iran, outlining a proposal for an end to the ongoing conflict between the two nations. The plan, which was shared with Al Jazeera, calls for Iran to agree not to develop a nuclear weapon and halt all enrichment of uranium for at least 12 years.

In exchange, the US would gradually lift sanctions and release billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets and withdraw its naval blockade of Iranian ports. Both sides would reopen the critical waterway within 30 days of signing.

Iran has yet to formally respond to the proposal, but officials have indicated that a large divide remains between the two sides. A spokesperson for Iran’s parliament said the document was “more of an American wish-list than a reality.”

The US proposal follows one submitted by Iran via mediator Pakistan a week ago. The Iranian military has been involved in recent exchanges with US forces, including targeting an Iranian oil tanker and a second vessel near the United Arab Emirates’ Fujairah port.

Despite the exchange of fire, neither side has yet announced the collapse of the ceasefire, which has been in place since April 8. Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar Atas reported that an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Iran is still reviewing the US proposal and that several US demands are considered “unreasonable, unrealistic and maximalist.”

The situation remains fluid, with both sides continuing to engage in diplomatic efforts. The outcome of these negotiations is uncertain, but it appears that a significant gap exists between the positions of the two parties.
