Irans Revolutionary Guard Commander Ahmad Vahidi Named

Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi Appointed as Head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards

In a move that comes amid ongoing conflict with the US and Israel, Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi has taken command of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This appointment marks a significant development in the country’s military leadership, given the recent losses suffered by the IRGC. The death of Qassem Soleimani, the long-time commander of the IRGC’s elite Quds Force, and Mohammad Pakpour, the most recent IRGC chief, has created a power vacuum at the top of the organization.

Vahidi’s appointment as deputy chief in December was not unexpected, following his previous roles within the IRGC and Iran’s military establishment. He has held key positions in intelligence and the military since the late 1970s and previously led the elite Quds Force from 1988 to 1997. Vahidi is a product of the IRGC from its earliest days and has risen through the ranks, including serving as deputy chief of Iran’s army.

Vahidi has publicly sworn allegiance to upholding the principles and aims of the Islamic Revolution. In his previous roles, he has demonstrated pragmatism in pursuing Tehran’s strategic goals. He has also held senior political positions, including defence minister under former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and interior minister under the late President Ebrahim Raisi.

Vahidi’s appointment as head of the IRGC comes at a critical moment for Iran, which is currently facing a joint US-Israeli assault that has resulted in significant losses. His experience and background make him well-suited to lead the organization in this challenging situation. However, his past involvement in alleged crimes, including the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community centre in Buenos Aires, have raised concerns.
