Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has released a statement marking Nowruz, the Persian New Year, in which he claimed that Iran’s enemies are being “defeated” despite ongoing attacks from the US and Israel.
In a televised address on Friday, Khamenei praised the unity of the Iranian people, saying that their differences in religious, intellectual, cultural, and political backgrounds have created a strong bond. He stated that this unity has allowed the enemy to be defeated, contrary to expectations by the US and Israel that the Iranian people would overthrow the government after a short period.
Khamenei attributed the failure of these expectations to the Iranian constitution’s “survival protocol”, which was designed to ensure the system’s continuity even in times of shock. He also denied Iran’s involvement in recent attacks on Turkey and Oman, labeling them as “false flag” incidents intended to sow discord among neighboring countries.
The supreme leader called for an end to fighting between Afghanistan and Pakistan, stating that he is willing to assist his eastern neighbors. The two countries had agreed to a temporary pause in hostilities during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr this week.
Khamenei’s statement comes as the US and Israel continue their attacks on Iran, which has not seen its supreme leader in public since he took office following the assassination of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
