Ireland’s Prime Minister Meets with US President Trump During Annual Saint Patrick’s Day Visit
Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin met with US President Donald Trump at the Oval Office on Tuesday, as part of an annual visit to Washington, DC. The meeting took place amidst a day dominated by the resignation of US counterterrorism chief Joe Kent and Trump’s comments on NATO allies refusing to support military action in the Strait of Hormuz.
During the meeting, Martin pushed back against some of Trump’s stances on issues including Iran and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. However, it was noted that Martin remained relatively quiet for the first 20 minutes of the conversation, allowing Trump to express his grievances.
When asked about Trump’s comments on European leaders’ failure to support US actions in Iran, Martin responded by suggesting a common ground could be found through diplomatic engagement. He also addressed Trump’s criticism of UK Prime Minister Starmer, stating that he believed Starmer was an earnest and sound person who had previously worked with him.
The meeting took place against the backdrop of Ireland’s strong stance on international law, particularly in relation to the US-Israel war on Iran. In 2022, Ireland joined South Africa’s International Court of Justice case accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. The Irish president, Catherine Connolly, had previously commented that the US-Israel war on Iran was illegal under international law.
During the meeting, Trump appeared not to realize that the Irish president is a woman and responded with a comment that Martin did not correct him. However, when discussing Starmer, Martin pointed out the former leader’s controversial role during Ireland’s war of independence from Britain.
The meeting has been met with mixed reactions in Ireland, with some opposition politicians criticizing Martin for his passivity on the issue of US actions in Iran. Others have praised his diplomatic approach and ability to gently deflect and contradict Trump in a conversational manner.
