Irish Footballers and Celebrities Urge Boycott of Israel International Matches

Dublin to Host UEFA Nations League Match Against Israel Amid Controversy

The Republic of Ireland is set to host a UEFA Nations League match against Israel on October 4 at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, despite controversy surrounding the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza. A campaign group, Irish Sport for Palestine, has accused Israel of engaging in “genocide” during the war in Gaza and breaching UEFA and FIFA statutes by playing on occupied Palestinian land.

The FAI received an open letter from the campaign group, which was signed by several high-profile individuals, including League of Ireland players, former coach Brian Kerr, and singer-songwriter Christy Moore. The letter urges the FAI to boycott the match in support of Palestine.

In response, Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin has stated that he believes sport should be separate from politics, but acknowledged that the Israeli government’s actions have been “horrific”. However, the FAI has maintained its decision to host the match, citing obligations and potential consequences for Irish football.

A recent poll by the Irish Football Supporters Partnership found 76% of respondents opposed the fixture being played. The FAI Chief Executive, David Courell, stated that the national team had no choice but to fulfill its obligations or risk harming the long-term sporting interests of Irish football.

The match is expected to be staged at a neutral venue for the September 27 fixture designated as an Israeli home match. The campaign group’s demands have sparked debate and controversy surrounding the role of sport in politics and international relations.
