Is the Global Humanitarian System Breaking Down, Experts Warn

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Secretary-General Jagan Chapagain has expressed concerns about the impact of reduced US aid and increased attacks on humanitarian workers on the global humanitarian system.

Chapagain stated that life-saving operations are being scaled back despite a surge in needs from various parts of the world, including Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine, and areas affected by climate-driven disasters. The International Federation is facing unprecedented strain due to dwindling donor funding.

The US has been one of the main donors to humanitarian efforts globally. However, Chapagain noted that aid cuts have taken place. Additionally, there have been reports of attacks on humanitarian workers, which pose a significant threat to their ability to provide assistance.

Chapagain also addressed the erosion of international law and its impact on neutrality and protection in modern conflicts. He emphasized that these principles are essential for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of humanitarian operations.

The International Federation is committed to upholding neutrality and protection as core values, despite the challenges posed by increasingly complex and violent conflicts. Chapagain’s comments highlight the need for sustained support from donors and governments to maintain the integrity of the global humanitarian system.
