Israel and Syria Establish Dedicated Communication Line Through US-Brooked Talks

Three countries agree to establish joint mechanism for intelligence sharing and military coordination.

A statement released by Israel, Syria, and the United States announced that the three countries have agreed to set up a dedicated communication cell. The mechanism will facilitate the exchange of information on security matters, including military de-escalation efforts.

The agreement comes after meetings held between Israeli and Syrian officials in Paris, with US involvement. The statement described the mechanism as a platform for addressing disputes promptly and preventing misunderstandings.

Syrian officials have expressed concerns that progress on strategic issues cannot be made without a clear timeline for Israeli troop withdrawal from territory seized since 2024. An initiative to suspend all Israeli military activity against Syria was proposed during the talks, but its status remains unclear.

The mechanism will also enable diplomatic engagement and commercial opportunities between Israel and Syria. The US State Department stated that the agreed-upon communication cell would facilitate immediate and ongoing coordination on these matters.

Israel has occupied parts of the Syrian Golan Heights since 1967, with further expansion in recent years. The country has conducted military attacks against Syria, including on the Ministry of Defence building in Damascus. The new Syrian authorities, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, have received overt backing from US President Donald Trump.

The establishment of the joint mechanism marks a step towards potential security cooperation between Israel and Syria.
