Israel has appointed Michael Lotem as its first ambassador to Somaliland, a move that comes months after the country recognized the breakaway region. The appointment was reported by Israel’s public broadcaster on Wednesday.

This development marks the latest step in a partnership between Israel and Somaliland, which has gained momentum since December when Israel became the first country to recognize Somaliland. Since then, both sides have moved quickly to develop their relationship.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following a civil war, but Somalia has never recognized it. The recognition by Israel has drawn criticism from various international organizations, including the UN Security Council, the African Union, and the European Union.

In response to the appointment of Lotem as ambassador, Somalia’s foreign ministry released a statement condemning the move, describing it as a “direct breach” of the country’s sovereignty and unity. Somaliland’s president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, has welcomed Israel’s recognition and described the country as a “reliable partner”.

The relationship between Israel and Somaliland has been developing rapidly since December. In January, Israel’s foreign minister visited Somaliland’s capital, Hargeisa, and Somaliland sent a delegation from its water ministry to Israel for training in water management. The president of Somaliland has also expressed hopes for a trade deal with Israel.

Somalia’s officials have expressed concerns about the growing ties between Israel and Somaliland, with some accusing Israel of seeking to establish a military base in the country. However, Somaliland’s minister of the presidency has stated that the country is pursuing a “strategic relationship” with Israel encompassing security cooperation.
