Israeli Forces Establish ‘Yellow Line’ in Southern Lebanon
The Israeli military announced on Saturday that it had established a “yellow line” in southern Lebanon, similar to an existing measure in Gaza. According to the military’s statement, its forces operating south of the yellow line identified terrorists who violated ceasefire understandings and approached from north of the line in a manner posing an immediate threat.
This is the first time the Israeli military has referred to such a “yellow line” in Lebanon. The announcement comes after a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon took effect on Thursday. Since October, Israel’s “yellow line” has divided Gaza into separate zones, with eastern areas controlled by the Israeli military and western areas with fewer restrictions.
The Israeli military said it would continue to take actions in response to fighters approaching areas where its soldiers are stationed, claiming they posed an imminent threat. The military stated that actions taken in self-defence and to remove immediate threats were not restricted by the ceasefire.
Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem expressed concerns about the ongoing truce with Israel, stating that a complete cessation of hostilities was necessary for it to continue. He also demanded that Israel completely withdraw from Lebanon, with plans to focus on prisoner releases, resident returns, and reconstruction efforts.
The United Nations has reported over 10,000 Israeli ceasefire violations since November 27, 2024, as well as hundreds of Lebanese deaths. The Israeli government has stated that Hezbollah must be addressed in order for a lasting resolution.
