Israel faces international criticism following NGO ban implementation

Israel has implemented a ban on dozens of international aid organizations working to provide life-saving assistance to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The ban has come into effect and affects 37 aid groups, including Doctors Without Borders and the Norwegian Refugee Council.

The ban is due to new government regulations requiring international NGOs working in Gaza and the occupied West Bank to provide detailed information on staff members, as well as their funding and operations. Israel has defended the move by accusing international organizations of having links to Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad without providing evidence.

Human rights and advocacy groups in Israel have condemned the ban, stating that it “undermines principled humanitarian action” and endangers staff and communities. They argue that the requirements contravene humanitarian principles and follow a longstanding Israeli government campaign to vilify and impede the work of aid groups providing assistance to Palestinians.

The ban has sparked global condemnation, with the United Nations human rights chief Volker Turk describing it as “the latest in a pattern of unlawful restrictions on humanitarian access” in the occupied Palestinian territory. Doctors Without Borders has expressed concern that the ban could cut hundreds of thousands of Palestinians off from essential care if aid groups lose access.

The Norwegian Refugee Council’s former UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths stated that aid agencies are essential to aid delivery, particularly in the Gaza Strip. The ban is expected to have a significant impact on the provision of life-saving assistance to Palestinians in need.
