Israel Football Association faces backlash over teams participation in Qatar tournament

Dublin Hosts Friendly Match Against Qatar, Protests Erupt Over Upcoming Israel Games

A friendly match between Ireland and Qatar was disrupted by pro-Palestinian protests in Dublin on Thursday. The incident occurred during the Republic of Ireland’s midfielder Jamie McGrath’s comments about the potential for increased controversy surrounding upcoming games against Israel.

Ireland is set to host Israel at Aviva Stadium on October 4, while a September 27 fixture has been scheduled as an Israel home match at a neutral venue. Qatar’s match against Ireland was part of their preparations for this summer’s World Cup, where they will begin their campaign against Switzerland on June 13.

Earlier this month, Irish footballers joined with celebrities in a campaign calling for a boycott of Israel’s matches. However, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has stated that it will proceed with the fixtures and may face disciplinary measures if players refuse to participate.

During the match, tennis balls featuring the Palestinian flag were thrown onto the pitch, causing the game to be halted twice. McGrath expressed concerns about the potential for increased protests in the coming months, stating that the situation “is going to heat up over the next few months.”

The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign held a protest at the Dail (Irish parliament) on Tuesday, while manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has weighed in on the debate. McGrath was asked about the likelihood of a resolution ahead of the matches, but replied that he had “no idea” and acknowledged that the situation may be taken out of his hands as it escalates.

The FAI’s leadership received 93% support from members to press UEFA to suspend the Israel Football Association from European competitions in November last year. The upcoming games against Israel are expected to spark further controversy, with McGrath and other players facing pressure to take a stance on the issue.
