FIFA Fines Israel FA $190,700 for Discrimination Breaches
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has imposed a fine of 150,000 Swiss francs ($190,700) on the Israeli Football Association (IFA) for “multiple breaches” of its anti-discrimination obligations. The disciplinary committee’s report found that the IFA failed to take meaningful action against Beitar Jerusalem, an Israeli club accused of persistent and well-documented racist behavior.
In October 2024, the Palestine Football Association reported allegations of discrimination by the IFA to FIFA, which initiated an investigation. However, instead of requesting a suspension of the IFA, FIFA opted for fines and sanctions. The report listed several instances of racism incidents in Israeli football, including the use of slogans and chants directed at Arab players.
FIFA’s disciplinary committee stated that Beitar Jerusalem’s behavior was part of a systemic pattern of conduct that offends basic rules of decent behavior and brings the sport into disrepute. The IFA was also ordered to display a banner stating “Football Unites the World – No to Discrimination” at its next three FIFA competition home matches.
As part of the fine, the IFA will be required to invest one-third of the amount towards implementing a plan to ensure action against discrimination and prevent repeated incidents. The Israeli FA was also warned for deficient and substantively inadequate sanctions against Beitar Jerusalem.
