Palestinian Medics Receive Human Remains from Israel
A total of 54 bodies and human remains have been returned to Gaza by Israel, according to Palestinian medical officials. The remains arrived at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City on Wednesday, where they are being examined by forensic teams.
The International Committee of the Red Cross handed over the body bags containing the remains, as well as skull samples placed in separate bags. Forensic official Omar Suleiman stated that several bodies showed extensive signs of abuse, including mutilation and torture.
Previous reports have highlighted the issue of Palestinian detainees dying in Israeli custody, with causes including torture, medical neglect, malnutrition, and physical assault. Physicians for Human Rights-Israel reported at least 94 Palestinian detainees had died under these circumstances.
The remains are now being examined to identify them and provide answers to grieving families. Al-Shifa Hospital has set up an improvised identification centre, where family members can view blurred images of the bodies in search of recognisable features.
Shadi al-Fayoumi, whose brothers remain missing, visited the hospital to try to identify their remains. He reported that the images were unclear and lacked discernible features, making it difficult for him to determine what happened to his brothers. Al-Fayoumi’s mother has been described as inconsolable, while her children have remained silent due to fear.
The Israeli forces handed over the bodies without providing any information about their identities or how they died. The Palestinian families are now left with unanswered questions and a lack of closure.
