Gaza City, Gaza - The Israeli military conducted a search operation in the Tuffah neighbourhood east of Gaza City, resulting in the excavation and desecration of at least 250 graves. The cemetery, which contains the remains of thousands of Palestinian families, was targeted during the operation.
The operation was carried out as part of the search for the last captive Israeli policeman, Ran Gvili. According to eyewitnesses, the military used heavy machinery and bulldozers to examine approximately 250 graves in a short period. The excavation process led to the destruction of many tombstones and a significant alteration of the cemetery’s landscape.
The cemetery, which is located near the “yellow line” under Israeli military control, has been inaccessible to families due to the ongoing conflict. Fatima Abdullah, whose husband Mohammad al-Shaarawi was killed in an Israeli drone strike, expressed her concerns about the desecration of graves. “Corpses scattered, bones, bags thrown… they were bulldozing graves, dumping the remains as if they were nothing,” she said.
The incident is not an isolated event, as human rights organizations have documented numerous instances of Israeli destruction of Palestinian graves in Gaza. The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor reported that approximately 21 out of 60 cemeteries in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed, leaving thousands of families with uncertainty about the fate of their relatives’ bodies.
The incident has sparked condemnation from human rights organizations, who have called for urgent international intervention to halt the destruction and land levelling being carried out by the Israeli army.
