BEIRUT, LEBANON - A recent incident in the predominantly Christian area of Ain Saadeh has highlighted the escalating tensions and displacement crisis in Lebanon.
On Sunday evening, a phone call was interrupted by an explosion that shook a building in the area. Two US-made GBU-39 bombs crashed through the roof, killing three people: Pierre Moawad, Flavia, and Roula Mattar. The victims were identified as members of the Lebanese Forces party and included Christians.
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, the victims have been part of a broader displacement crisis in Lebanon, which has seen over 1.2 million people forced from their homes since Israeli attacks began in early March. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,500 people, including 130 children.
The incident in Ain Saadeh has exacerbated existing divisions within Lebanese society. Some communities blame Israel for its actions, while others point to Hezbollah as a cause of the conflict. Displaced individuals have reported experiencing discrimination, regardless of their support for the group.
Israel’s military released videos showing systematic demolitions in southern villages and carried out attacks across the country, including near Lebanon’s largest health facility, the Rafik Hariri University Hospital. The hospital was targeted at least eight times, resulting in four fatalities and 39 injuries.
The situation remains volatile, with Israeli forces battling Hezbollah in southern villages and declaring intentions to expand their buffer zone and occupy southern Lebanon.
