Israeli Air Attacks Hit Eastern Lebanon, Killing at Least 12 People
A series of air attacks hit the village of Mashghara in the Bekaa Valley late on Monday, according to state-run National News Agency reports. The Israeli military stated that it targeted more than 100 Hezbollah infrastructure sites and “terrorists” across southern Lebanon.
The attacks came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu authorized increased strikes against Hezbollah across Lebanon. A US-brokered ceasefire took effect last month, but the situation is now under strain.
According to Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr, reporting from Mashghara, at least 10 attacks occurred in a half-hour period on an area with residential buildings. The exact death toll remains unknown due to ongoing excavations of rubble.
Other areas in southern Lebanon were also affected by the air attacks, including Arnoun, Yohmor al-Shaqif, Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, and Mayfadoun. Heavy artillery bombardment was reported in these towns, as well as shelling in Shahour and Srifa in the Tyre district.
Air attacks were also reported on Kawthariyat al-Ruz, Sarafina, Kafr, and Majdal Selem, all in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military issued forced displacement orders for residents in the city of Nabatieh, advising them to evacuate their homes immediately due to safety concerns.
The conflict began on March 2, following Tehran-aligned Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel. Since then, over 3,100 people have been killed and more than 9,600 wounded in Israeli attacks. At least a million people have been displaced.
