Israeli blockade traps Gaza-bound pilgrim during Hajj preparations

A 64-year-old woman from Gaza is among thousands of individuals who have been unable to attend the Hajj pilgrimage due to restrictions imposed by Israel.

Najia Abu Lehia had long held a desire to perform the Hajj with her late husband. However, her plans were thwarted when he passed away during the 2014 conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

As millions of pilgrims travel to Mecca for the annual Hajj, thousands like Ms. Abu Lehia remain stranded in Gaza due to the Israeli blockade. The blockade has restricted the movement of people and goods in and out of the territory since 2007.

The Israeli government’s blockade has been in place for over 15 years, with its primary purpose being to restrict the flow of materials and personnel into Gaza. The blockade has had a significant impact on the daily lives of residents in Gaza, including those who wish to travel abroad.

According to reports, thousands of Palestinians are currently unable to attend the Hajj due to the Israeli blockade. Many have been waiting for years to make the pilgrimage, but their plans have been repeatedly delayed or blocked.

The situation has sparked concerns among human rights groups and Palestinian leaders, who argue that the blockade is a form of collective punishment and violates international law. The Israeli government maintains that the blockade is necessary to prevent Hamas from acquiring materials that could be used for military purposes.
