Israeli human rights group seeks court order for Gaza doctor releases

Israeli Human Rights Organization Petitions Supreme Court for Release of Detained Doctors

Physicians for Human Rights-Israel (PHRI) has filed a petition with the Israeli Supreme Court seeking the immediate release of 14 doctors from Gaza who have been held without charge for over a year. The organization claims that the continued detention of these medical professionals is hindering efforts to rehabilitate Gaza’s healthcare system.

According to PHRI, substantial evidence has emerged during Israel’s conflict in Gaza that the enclave’s healthcare infrastructure has been severely damaged. The organization is urging international actors to show solidarity in pushing for the release of the detained doctors.

Among those being held without charge is Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, who was detained in December 2024 after Israeli forces stormed his hospital in northern Gaza. His brother reported that Dr. Abu Safia had lost significant weight and suffered multiple fractures while in custody.

United Nations experts have warned that Dr. Abu Safia has been subjected to severe torture, while Amnesty International has stated that his detention is part of a broader pattern by Israel aimed at dismantling Gaza’s healthcare system.

Multiple aid groups have warned that Gaza is facing a critical shortage of medical supplies due to Israeli restrictions. A plastic surgeon who visited Gaza between March 2024 and June 2025 reported encountering dire conditions, including a complete blockade of fuel, water, and food, as well as severe shortages of medical supplies.

The Israeli military has denied deliberately targeting medical workers in Gaza, but has accused Hamas of using hospitals for military purposes. However, no credible evidence has been provided to support these claims.
