Global Leaders Condemn Israel’s Interception of Gaza-Bound Aid Boats
A total of 22 out of 58 aid boats traveling through international waters and bound for the Gaza Strip have been intercepted by Israeli authorities. The vessels, part of a second Global Sumud Flotilla, set sail from Barcelona on April 12.
According to organizers, Israel seized the boats in international waters off Greece’s Peloponnese Peninsula, approximately 500 miles from Gaza. The flotilla’s organizers reported that 211 activists were detained, including a Paris city councillor. However, Israel’s Foreign Ministry had earlier stated that 175 individuals were taken into custody.
Reactions to the incident have been swift and widespread. Italy has called for the immediate release of Italian nationals on board the flotilla, condemning the seizure as an unlawful act. The country’s government also urged respect for international law and guarantees for the safety of those on board.
Germany has expressed concern over the developments, stating that it is committed to continuing humanitarian aid to Gaza while respecting international law. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has described Israel’s actions as “illegal,” calling for restraint from irresponsible actions.
Turkiye’s Foreign Ministry has condemned the interception as an act of piracy, citing violations of humanitarian principles and international law. The Palestinian group Hamas has also condemned the seizure, accusing Israel of committing a crime without accountability.
Amnesty International has called for the immediate release of detained activists, emphasizing the need for consular support, humane treatment, and protection from torture.
